‘we might learn more about humility by gazing at an arrangement of tiles than by studying the gospels…’

Alain de Botton writing about early theologians.

my thanks to Arthur Scargill

Growing up in the 70s meant power cuts.  All credit to my parents, they were evenings of delight.  No electricity meant massive potatoes cooked in the log fire, embraced with dollops of butter.  Whilst they baked my Dad strummed his guitar and we all sang country songs, Mum crocheting a blanket (honest – it’s all true).  Formulative events in my taste for simplicity.

A year ago I made a decision to follow the simplicity I love.  Strangely, my new home is the first where there is no open fire.  I miss it, but fire is fire.  And candles on a Moroccan table bring the same vibrant light to a room.

So thank you, Arthur and friends, for unintentionally introducing me to the lovelier things in life.

Real interiors

This day is a good day to look at your home.

A home that works is good for the soul. It’s a feeling more than a look.  William Morris urged us to ‘keep nothing in your houses that you do not believe to be useful or perceive to be beautiful’.  I used this motto to guide my (massive) decluttering throughout last year.  I did it in stages.  The first was easy; things I didn’t like!

Make today your day to shed things you don’t like.  It’s the first step to an authentic  home.

Be happy :)

It’s not all just about beautiful tiles..

Starting mud hut company was the beginning of a journey.  Making tiles individually that were hand cut, each presenting their own flaws, joys and attributes boldly and unashamedly was a very new thing.  Three years ago it was going against the tide.  Guiding me was the Islamic principle that only God is perfect (causing carpet weavers traditionally to embed deliberate flaws into their designs) , and that it should subsequently be natural to celebrate naked individuality.

If you are looking for your home to be beautiful, it has to be honestly so.  If you strive too hard chances are you are striving for somebody else’s vision.  A borrowed or learnt perception of what beauty is.  Really understanding, and accepting, your own honest view of beauty takes a whole lot more understanding of yourself.

My passion is integration; Truth, beauty, homes and creativity.  As well as making tiles I teach, and style homes.  So this blog will feature all these aspects (and other gems of inspiration I come across) because at the end of the day what we are is what we have, and it’s there to be shared.

If you like it please make yourself known.  It’s good to have friends and followers.

it’s the small things that cause us to reflect.  Enjoy the small, and remember it in your conversations.  The right words can transform lives.  Think about your words and enjoy them.  Use them well, because they can be beautiful.  Today I was affected by words published by Elena Giavini in her blog  thanks Elena.  :) x.  Good luck with your heartfelt ventures, everyone.
